Beautification Commission Meeting
Wednesday June 7, 2012
PRESENT: Pat Byrnes; Elaine Dube; Marylee Hickey; Mary Mourey; Tony Russo; Pat Sirois.
Also Present: Ted Fravel, Director/Parks and Recreation.
Absent: Dolores Kehoe (excused); Betty Russell; (excused).
Tim Bockus, Director/Public Works (excused).
CALL TO ORDER:
Chair Sirois called the meeting of the Beautification Commission to order at 5:35 p.m.
ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES OF MAY 3, 2012
Marylee Hickey made a motion to accept the minutes of the May 3, 2012 meeting.
Seconded by Mary Mourey. Approved.
OPPORTUNITY FOR CITIZENS TO SPEAK: None.
FINANCIAL REPORT:
Mary Mourey reported there is approximately $437 left in the General Fund. She further stated that monies were encumbered for Botticellos and Better Stones.
Remembrance Fund balance is $520.96.
COMMUNICATIONS:
Information from Arbor Day Foundation
Letter received announcing appointment of Lee Ann Manning to the Beautification Commission.
CHAIR'S REPORT:
Chair Sirois reported that Mayor Leclerc has stated she wants all the same colors extending down Main
Street.
TREE WARDEN'S REPORT:
No report due to the absence of Tim Bockus.
Ted Fravel reported that a tree had been removed in front of the EHCCC. His department received a donation from the Class of 1962 to replace it with a new tree.
OLD BUSINESS:
A. Spring Plantings
Discussion was held on the 3 barrels on the green going to the Veteran’s Memorial Clubhouse. Tony Russo stated that there is not a problem planting but a problem with maintenance. In the past, residents in the area took care of the barrels. Marylee Hickey will contact students she knows, who are in the Boy Scouts, to see if they will take this community project on. She will report back next month.
Ted Fravel informed the Commission about the Mayor’s Clean Up day in town held on May 19. Approximately 60-70 people joined forces to focus on areas in town. Ted further stated that he will be having students work this summer through the Summer Youth Program and they will continue to work on the areas as well as clean up the trails.
Tony Russo reported that the town cleaned up Bicentennial Square prior to Memorial Day.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Residential Beautification Award
Mary Mourey made a motion to award 78 Temple Drive the Beautification Commission Residential award for June 2012. Seconded by Marylee Hickey. Approved.
B. Business Beautification Award
Pat Byrnes made a motion to award the owner of the building on Main/Pitkin Street the Beautification Business award for June 2012. Seconded by Elaine Dube. Approved.
The following Beautification Award suggestions for the month of July:
- Fitzgerald Drive area
- 210 Goodwin Street
- 5 Lehigh Drive
Business Award:
- Wells Fargo – Main Street
- Former Callahan property on the corner of Main/Maplewood
OTHER BUSINESS: None at this time.
CONCERNS OF THE COMMISSION: None at this time.
PAYMENT OF BILLS:
Theresa Godreau (clerk) $ 75.00
Marylee Hickey made a motion to pay the bills as submitted. Seconded by Tony Russo. Approved.
ADJOURNMENT:
There being no further business, Pat Byrnes made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 6:21p.m. Seconded by Mary Mourey. Approved.
The next meeting of the Commission will be July 5, 2012 in Building Department Conference Room at 5:30 p.m.
